Spring Energy Checklist: 6 Simple Steps to Save You Money

(2-minute read)

Spring is here, and it is a great time to create an energy checklist! By taking the time to check your building’s energy efficiency, you will save money and could avoid costly repairs and upgrades down the road. Below are some suggestions from AEP Energy to help you reduce energy waste, maintain your business, and save money!

  • Seal air leaks and cracks. Even tiny amounts of escaping air are a recipe for excess energy usage. Be sure to check the seals around your building’s doors and windows. Drafts in offices and warehouses may require insulation.
  • LED lighting. If your building has incandescent lighting, switch to LED lights. Not only are LED bulbs brighter, but they also use less energy than incandescent. They also last longer, which not only saves energy but can save money over time.
  • Rotate ceiling fan blades to counterclockwise. During the winter, your ceiling fan blades should turn clockwise so warm air is pushed down to create circulation. As summer approaches, the fan blades should be turned counterclockwise to pull warm air up and away – creating a breeze. Rotating the air circulation in your space allows your HVAC system run more efficiently and save on your energy bills.
  • Change air filters. Don’t let a dirty air filter reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. Change the air filters every month in your facility. Not only will it improve your buildings air quality, but you’ll reduce the risk of costly damage to your system.
  • Check backup power systems. Is your business ready for a weather emergency? During power outages it is important to have systems in place that won’t lose product or productivity. Take the time to review your backup generators: check the filter, battery, and oil. If you do not have a generator, consider purchasing one for your business.
  • Schedule your rate checks with maintenance. Now is the perfect time to lock in historically low natural gas rates for your business.
