Simple Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

What started out as a 1960’s “teach-in” style protest where thousands of students and residents around the world sat down in the streets on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has transitioned into a global celebration focused on public awareness of cleaner and more environmentally responsible living. There are several simple ways our actions and choices can impact the environment.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers a list of clean choices people can make, from recycling and gardening to community-wide sustainable living programs. The EPA also offers a Greenhouse Gases Equivalencies Calculator that shows the impact of those efforts.

Here are a few ways you can reduce your carbon footprint:

  • Update your home with energy-efficient products. AEP Energy makes shopping for energy-efficient and connected home products simple with AEP Energy Reward Store! Enroll or renew in a traditional or renewable plan and earn Reward Dollars to redeem in our online marketplace.
  • Live sustainably with the Green Program! Using the EPA’s greenhouse gasses calculator also allows you to monitor your carbon footprint.
  • Choose renewable energy. AEP Energy offers ECO-Advantage®, a renewable energy plan for your home.
  • Create less waste by recycling and reducing the things you dispose of. This helps reduce the size of landfills and the methane gas they produce. Make sure to check with your local recycling program to learn how to recycle properly!
  • Enjoy the great outdoors! Instead of driving, walk or ride your bike when possible. Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Take your pet for a walk, toss the frisbee with a friend or simply read a book and enjoy the sun!
