Stay Safe This Winter

At AEP Energy, safety is one of our core values, and Zero Harm a company-wide goal. That belief extends to our customers and our communities. So, as the temperatures continue to drop, and winter storms may be headed your way, we understand that staying safe and warm can be challenging. It’s important to be prepared for winter, whether you are indoors or outside. Find out how taking a few simple steps can help you and be ready.

Prepare your family

One of the first steps to winter safety and preparedness is to plan ahead. Consider creating a plan of action and sharing it with your family. Learn more about how to create emergency action plans from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) here. Be sure to have the telephone number for your local utility in case you find yourself without power and need to report an outage.

Prepare your home

Weatherproof your home. Check for and seal leaks around doors and windows to help keep the cold air out. Check the insulation in your attic and any visible exterior walls. Add insulation if necessary. If you use a fireplace or wood burning stove, have wood or fuel on hand and close to your home. Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls to prevent them from freezing and subsequently bursting.

Prepare your vehicle

Prepare an emergency car kit. Have your vehicle serviced for routine maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer. Inspect the tires for wear spots and to ensure there is an appropriate amount of tread to handle snowy conditions. Use a wintertime mixture of windshield wiper fluid to help efficiently clean your windshield. And keep at least a half a tank of gasoline in the tank to prevent ice in the tank and gas lines.

As we weather this winter together, let’s all take some preventative steps to get through it safely.
