Tips to Get Your Business Summer-Ready

June 10, 2020

Summer is here! Rising temperatures can sometimes mean rising energy bills. Don’t sweat – you can offset the summer heat by practicing energy efficient habits in your business. Here are a few tips to help you beat the heat:

  1. Adjust your air conditioning temperature. Air conditioning is a welcome reprieve from the summer heat, but it requires a lot of energy to run. If you can, consider increasing your air conditioning temperature a few degrees to reduce energy consumption. You likely won’t notice, especially when your business is closed, and it could help reduce energy costs.
  2. Invest in a smart thermostat. Instead of manually monitoring your business’ temperature, smart thermostats do it for you by automatically adjusting cooling and heating temperatures to your preferences. This ensures a hands-off approach to temperature management.
  3. Take advantage of shade. Whether you choose to plant trees or shrubs outside of your business’ windows to block the sun or purchase sunlight-blocking shades or curtains, shading the sun’s warm rays can help lower your building’s overall temperature.
  4. Use your ceiling fans. If your business is equipped with ceiling fans, turn those on to increase air flow in your building without cranking the air conditioning. Remember to switch your blade to rotate counter-clockwise in the summer. This pushes the cool air back down towards the ground.
  5. Replace your HVAC filters. According to the Department of Energy, replacing a dirty or clogged filter with a clean one can reduce your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent1.
