Electricity and Energy Moving Checklist

Whether you’re in the process of moving or will be in the near future, you need to ensure your electricity and energy supply at your new home is organized and ready to go! Moving can often be a very hectic time and it’s hard to remember all the different aspects that go into getting your new house up and running.

The first step is to get organized prior to moving day. Begin by making the cancellation and reconnection calls to your utility providers roughly two weeks before move day. These should also include services such as power, water, cable gas, and Internet. This allows plenty of time if you need to do any further work or run into any issues.

If you are moving into an apartment complex or facility that provides you a list of available utilities to the building, investigate to discover which provider would be best for you. Your real estate agent may be a helpful resource in the process.

If you live in or are moving to a deregulated state, such as Ohio, you have the opportunity to choose among multiple suppliers of natural gas and electricity that could provide significant financial and environmental savings.

Lastly, keep all your account information in one place to have ready when contacting new or old utility companies. A few questions that may be good to ask include

  •  Are there charges associated with canceling or starting my service?
  • Will someone or I need to be present in the home when the utilities need to be switched on or off?
  • Are there any other necessary forms that need to be completed prior to my move?

Moving can be a stressful process, but following this brief checklist can help it go as smoothly as possible. Stay organized and ask questions to ensure a successful transition!
