When you move you probably have a lot on your mind. Making sure everything is packed, unpacked, and organized can be stressful. There are other things you have to remember to take care of as well, like making sure your electricity and natural gas service is activated at your new address. So if you happen to be moving soon, follow the steps below to ensure your service gets set up properly, particularly if you already have an agreement with an energy supplier.

  1. Call your electric and/or natural gas company. Before moving, contact your electric and/or natural gas company to schedule a disconnection. If you are moving within the same service territory of your existing utility company, you can set up a connection date for your new address and account. If you are moving to another area, you’ll want to contact the electric and/or natural gas utility that services the area of your new home. Typically, you can find this information on your local public utilities commission’s website.
  2. Select a competitive retail energy supplier. If you are a thrifty shopper, most likely you have already selected a competitive retail energy provider for your electricity or your natural gas supply.  If so, we recommend that you contact your competitive retail energy provider and inform them of your move. They will instruct you on what options are available to you. Depending on what state you live in and who your electric or natural gas company is, you may be able to transfer your existing contract to your new home. Or in some cases you may need to sign a new agreement. If you haven’t selected a retail energy supplier yet, make the move today and consider AEP Energy, America’s Energy Partner®. We offer a variety of price plans, including ECO-AdvantageSM – our 100% wind renewable energy plan. You’ll enjoy peace of mind with a price that won’t change each month, like some competitors’ offers. To get started, visit AEPenergy.com and enter your zip code to see what plans are available in your area.

Once completed, you’ll feel good knowing that you are making progress on your checklist.  Also, be sure to check out our tips to help you save money and stay sane during your move!

If you have any questions about the process, feel free to contact your local utility or supplier. They can answer your questions and help you with the transition.
