Enrollment
-
In most cases, no. Municipal electric and natural gas systems, as well as many cooperatives, do not participate in energy choice programs. As a result, customers served by these providers are generally not eligible to choose an alternative electricity or natural gas supplier, such as AEP Energy. If you’re unsure whether your energy service is provided by a municipality, cooperative or investor-owned utility, check your current bill or contact our Customer Care Team at 866-258-3782.
-
Eligibility for energy assistance programs can vary by state and utility. If you participate in an assistance program, we recommend checking with your local utility to understand any enrollment requirements or restrictions that may apply. In Ohio, customers currently enrolled in PIPP or PIPP Plus are not eligible to enroll with an alternative energy supplier, including AEP Energy. If your participation in one of these programs changes in the future, you may become eligible to explore your energy supply options at that time. If you have questions about your eligibility, our team is happy to help you understand your options.
-
Eligibility requirements vary by utility and service area. In most cases, an outstanding balance with your local utility may prevent you from switching to a new energy supplier until the balance has been resolved. If you currently have a past-due balance, we recommend contacting your utility to discuss payment options and determine whether your account is eligible for enrollment. You can also contact our Customer Care Team at 866-258-3782, and we’ll be happy to help you understand any enrollment requirements that may apply to your account.
-
No. When you enroll with AEP Energy, we’ll work directly with your local utility to coordinate the switch, so there’s no need to contact your utility to cancel service. You’ll continue to be a customer of your local utility, which will still: deliver electricity to your home or business, read your meter, maintain poles, wires, and other infrastructure, respond to outages and emergencies, provide your monthly bill in most service areas. The only change is that AEP Energy will become your energy supplier. Your utility will continue to provide the reliable deliver and support services you depend on every day.
-
In most cases, your service will begin after the next available meter-read date after your local utility accepts your enrollment. This typically takes up to 45-75 days after we receive your enrollment form.
-
In some service areas, your local utility may charge a fee when you switch energy suppliers. If a switching fee applies, AEP Energy will cover that cost on your behalf. It’s important to note that switching fees are different from early termination fees. A switching fee is charged by the utility when you change suppliers, while an early termination fee is related to ending a contract before it’s scheduled end date.
-

Instead of experiencing significant seasonal fluctuations, you’ll make a consistent monthly payment based on your expected energy usage. If there is a significant difference between your projected and actual energy costs, your monthly budget billing amount may be adjusted. Budget billing can provide greater consistency from month to month, making it easier to plan for and manage your energy expenses throughout the year. One way to estimate your potential savings is to compare AEP Energy’s price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to the Price to Compare (PTC) listed on your utility bill. The PTC represents the supply rate charged by your utility for electricity generation service. To estimate your savings:
- Find the Price to Compare on your utility bill
- Subtract AEP Energy’s offered rate from the PTC
- Multiply the difference by your average monthly electricity usage (kWh)
For example, if the difference between the two rates is $0.01 per kWh and your household uses 1,000 kWh per month, your estimated monthly savings would be approximately $10. Keep in mind that actual savings can vary based on your energy usage, changes in utility rates, taxes, and other charges that may appear on your bill. Reviewing your recent usage history can help provide a more accurate estimate.
