Go Green with Energy Choice

Did you know that energy choice offers a variety of benefits and options, including renewable energy? If you live in a deregulated state, you can select a supplier, like AEP Energy, that offers a renewable energy plan. Oftentimes, renewable energy plans are backed with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). These RECs are an easy option for homeowners to go green. But what exactly is a REC and how do they work?

What Is a REC?

Renewable Energy Certificates represent the property rights to the environmental attributes of renewable electricity generation. RECs are issued when electricity is generated from a renewable source and delivered to the grid. For example, for each MWh of electricity produced by a renewable energy project, such as a wind or solar farm, they are credited with one REC that can be purchased by utilities and suppliers.

AEP Energy purchases RECs that match your energy supply to 100% renewable sources when you select our ECO-Advantage® plan. RECs make it possible for you to support the generation of electricity from renewable sources even if you don’t live near or have access to them. Check out our infographic to learn more about how RECs work.

What’s Included in a REC?

To ensure renewable energy is added to the grid, RECs include a tracking mechanism that audit and identify what renewable sources were purchased and where they come from. RECs account for, track and assign ownership to the renewable electricity generation and use, serving as proof that renewable energy sources were used in the generation of electricity.

Each REC includes several pieces of information including the certificate data and type, certificate ID number, renewable fuel type, renewable facility location, project name and build date, utility to which project is interconnected, emissions rate of the renewable resource and more.

How Can I Buy RECs?

AEP Energy’s ECO-Advantage® plan offers a variety of term lengths that match 100% of your electricity usage with national Green-e®1 certified wind RECs. Enrolling is easy!
